So I’m an Oil Puller Now

Yes, I added a new practice to my morning routine: Oil pulling. It sounds a bit weird but i promise doing it is not as weird as it sounds. Most likely you’ve heard of it because it’s really popular nowadays but I’ll write what I am doing.

So what is oil pulling?

According to Mayo Clinic, oral health is a window to our overall health which means health of our mouth can highly affect  our general health. We are all aware of the bacterias in our mouth and keeping them under control by daily brushing and flossing. And sure the concequences if enough oral hygiene is not provided; gum diseases and tooh decays… There are also some serious diseases and conditions that are linked to these oral bacterias. Endocarditis, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, osteoporosis, sjogren’s syndrome ( which is an immune system disorder ). In order to avoid these, we brush our teeth with a toothpaste of a popular brand and use an antiseptic mouthwash. A fancy toothpaste and a mouthwash which contain  A LOT of chemicals that you have no idea about.

Did you know that using mouthwash twice daily may increase blood pressure up to 3.5 millimeters of mercury (mmHg), raising your heart attack risk. (source: Free Radical Biology and Medicine). A research in Queen Mary University of London shows that mouthwashes kills the  “good” bacteria responsible for helping the blood vessels relax. And don’t be lazy and have a look at the ingredents of your toothpaste and do a little research. You might read that fluoride – the main ingredient in toothpaste – is also a main ingredient in  rat and cockroach poisons as well as it’s also a key component in anesthetic, hypnotic, and psychiatric drugs and SARIN NERVE GAS!

The solution is simple: Buy fluoride and chemical free toothpaste and mouthwash or make your own at home OR try oil pulling.

Oil pulling is a part of an Indian traditional medicine Ayurveda. So it’s not an new age health craze. Its origins are back to 5,000 BCE. It’s used for improving oral health and has benefits of helping headaches, migraines, asthma, acne and no wonder  white teeth. It works by pulling out the oral toxins. Every morning before breakfast and before you eat or drink anything, you put a tablespoon of coconut oil or sesame oil into your mouth and swish it around like your mouthwash. You do this for 20 minutes, spit it out and wash or brush your teeth as usual or don’t. And you’re done.

I prefer organic sesame oil though I’ve never tried coconut oil. ( I use coconut oil for my skin and hair but not for oil pulling ). It’s said that there’s a little scientific study and proof about the claims above. It’s been almost one month since I’ve started and I can say  I feel my teeth so clean and smooth. After I do it, I don’t need to brush. It’s pure oil without any chemical and risky substances in it. And also the fatty acids in coconut and sesame oil are known to help with healtier skin. ( Believe me, I’m using coconut oil for my face daily and the results are great!).

There are different techniques, some say you should only use coconut oil or sesame or sunflower oil, some say you should do it for 10 minutes, some say for 20 minutes.  This is my way and whether it works or not, I’m happy with the results. It’s harmless, it’s safe. We quit chemical mouthwash brands.  I do it first thing in the morning, and during 20 minutes I can make a sandwich for Mr. T and prepare my breakfast, get dressed and pack my sports bag.

So give it a try, I’m sure you won’t regret it.
